Sponsorship Immigration

Family Sponsorship Canada

For the Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, age 18 or above, you are able to sponsor certain family members to become Canadian permanent residents. If you become a permanent resident, you can live, study and work in Canada.
If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident, you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives.

To be a sponsor:

You must be eighteen years of age or older. You and the sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that execute you to provide financial support for your relative, if necessary.

This agreement also says the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support her or himself. You must provide financial support for a spouse, common-law or marital partner for three years from the date they become a permanent resident. You must provide financial support for a dependent child for 10 years, or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first.

Effective August 1, 2014, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has changed its definition of a dependent child for its immigration programs. A dependent child must be under 19 years of age, instead of the previous limit of under 22 years of age. Find out more about the change in the definition of a dependent child. New application kits, forms and fee information are now available. These new forms must be used starting August 1, 2014.

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and at least 18 years old, you can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada under the Family Class.

These can be:

Your spouse, your conjugal or common-law partner, your dependent child (this includes an adopted child) or other eligible relatives. If your family member can become a permanent resident, they can live, study and work in Canada.

Sponsor your spouse, partner or dependent children If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you may be able to sponsor your spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or dependent children to come to Canada as permanent residents.

Sponsor your parents and grandparents if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you may be able to sponsor your parents or grandparents to become permanent residents under the Family Class.

Your parents and grandparents may also be eligible to visit Canada for up to two years at a time under the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa.
Sponsor your adopted children and other eligible relatives If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you may be able to sponsor a relative to become a permanent resident under the Family Class.
