Canada Student Visa

More than 130,000 students visits Canada for Studies each year. In order to study at a Canadian educational institution, you must apply for a study permit. A study permit, once issued, allows a foreign national to study in Canada at an approved institute for the duration of the specified course or program. In some cases, you do not require a study permit to go to school in Canada:If the course or program you intend to study is less that 6 months in duration. If you are a family member or staff of a foreign representative to Canada. If you are a member of a foreign armed force.

To be eligible to study in Canada:
  • You must have been accepted by a school, college, university or other educational institution in Canada.
  • You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees;living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada; and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
  • You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada.
  •  You may have to provide a police certificate.
  • You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
  • You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) may also be required if the student is a citizen of a country from which Temporary Resident Visas are required for entry into Canada. A Temporary Resident Visa is not required for citizens of visa exempt countries.

While you are in Canada as a student, under any Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s (CIC’s) work programs for students, a student may be able to work.
 
Canada during the course of study under the following categories:

On campus without a Work Permit;Off campus with a Work Permit;In Co-op and Intern-ship Programs, where work experience is part of the curriculum, with a Work Permit.In addition to this, spouses or common-law partners of foreign students are eligible for a work permit for the duration as the study permit.
Upon graduation, a foreign student may apply for a work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. Under this program, the work permit may be issued for the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years.

What is a study permit?

How do I apply for a study permit?

1. Download and print the application package, which includes an application guide and forms. You can also apply for your study permit online.
2. Collect the documents you need to apply:

  • Completed study permit application form
  • Letter of acceptance from the University
  • A valid passport
  • Six passport photo
  • Proof of financial support, such as your bank statements for the past four months and proof of payment of tuition and residence fees. 
  • Any additional documents required by the visa office serving your country or region.
3. Pay the correct processing fee for your study permit application. The processing fee can usually be paid in the local currency. The website of your Canadian visa office will give additional information on how to pay the fee. The processing fee will not be refunded, even if your application is not accepted.
4. Sign and date the application form, include the receipt for the processing fee, and submit the form to the relevant Canadian visa office.
5. After the visa office receives your application, it might request that you supply additional information or documents, such as a medical examination or police certificate.

 A temporary resident visa is an official document issued by a Canadian visa office. It is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

If your country is on this list of designated countries you need a temporary resident visa, as well as a study permit, to enter Canada.

How do I apply for a temporary resident visa?

A visa officer will process your application for a temporary resident visa at the same time as your study permit. You do not need a separate application.

How long will my application take?

Processing times vary depending on the Canadian visa office where you submitted your application. Check application processing times statistics. This will give you an idea of how long it will take to process your application.

What happens after I apply?

The visa office will review your application. If your application is incomplete, it will be returned to you. If your application is complete, the visa office will decide if an interview is necessary. If so, you will be informed of the time and place. If your application is approved, you will receive a letter of introduction confirming the approval and a temporary resident visa in your passport if you are from a designated country for which Canada requires a visa.

What happens when I arrive in Canada?

When you arrive in Canada, you will be met by an officer from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) at the airport. The CBSA officer will ask to see your travel documents. Make sure they are not packed in your luggage, and that you have them with you. You should be ready to show the following documents:
a valid passport the letter of introduction from the visa office that you received when your study permit was approved,valid temporary resident visa (if required),
a copy of the letter of acceptance from University,proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in Canada,letters of reference or any other documents recommended by the visa office where you applied

When will my study permit be issued?

If there are no problems at the point of entry, the officer will let you enter Canada and will issue your study permit. You should:
check the study permit to make sure your personal information is accurate
check the expiry date. You must leave Canada by this date.
